Plastics and tyres amongst Portelet Beach Clean litter
GRG and La Societe Guernesias volunteers found a variety of litter along the Portelet Beach coastline, at the first of this year’s Beach Cleans.
GRG provided gloves, recycling bags and litter pickers to approximately 30 volunteers on Saturday 3rd March. 35 kg of rubbish was collected, including tyres, rope, fishing line, plastics, glass, fabric, tins and polythene. Some of the rubbish had obviously been in the sea for a long time.
All litter collected will be sorted and recycled at one of GRG’s recycling sites in Guernsey, to divert is away from landfill. Any items that cannot be recycled, such as black plastic, will be used as refuse derived fuel.
La Societe’s Laura Bampton was one of those who had organised previous clean-ups and said the group was glad of GRG’s involvement.
‘It’s made my job so much easier,’ she said, “and it’s been a great turn out considering the weather.”
As well as being recycled, Miss Bampton said all the waste collected would be weighed by GRG which would provide useful information about the amount of rubbish washed up on island shores as well as providing an idea of trends.
The aim is to report back about the waste removed from the beaches at the end of this year.
There are 11 more clean-ups set to take place this year, with the next one being at Belle Greve on 31 March, meeting at 1.30pm in the car park opposite the TV and radio studios.
